CHICKY EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

CHICKY EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW #CHICKY #INTERVIEW #KHH #KHIPHOP

Chicky recently released her first mixtape, "TWILIGHT & DAWN" and also her first music video which she shot and edited herself. We managed to track her down and here is Chicky's story as told to our curator Ferd Isaacs.

Where in Korea are you from?
I was born in Busan and I’m 24 years old now in Korean age.

What was the idea behind your new mixtape?
First of all, I am the one who REALLY loves the sky! And if someone asks me, what makes it so special to you? Well, when I look up at the dark sky with little brightness at the edge of somewhere like buildings or mountains, that view just brings me a calm lingering imagery. I also like the sky during the sunset!

Thus, I thought it would be a great idea for me to start my mixtape with this topic, ‘twilight.’ But we all know that when the sun sets, then later the sun rises. I thought hmm, that kinda matches with my 24 years of life! According to my experience, if there were some bad days (sunset), then there were also good days (sunrise) thereafter! And actually that repeats and repeats all over our lifetime.
On my mixtape I rapped and sang 6 tracks about my “dark side of myself”, which is, "Chapter 1: Twilight". And there are only 2 tracks for the “bright side of myself”, which is, "Chapter 2: Dawn". I thought there are actually a lot MORE pains then gains, and I thought that a pain, the darkness inside myself made (and will make) me much stronger. So when I was thinking about the track lists, I decided to focus and give more effort in, "Chapter 1: Twilight".

Your music video is awesome, what was the concept behind it?
Thanks for saying that! I actually filmed all those videos and photos in Jeju Island! After I finished recording all my tracks, I traveled Jeju Island for 5 days alone. Surprisingly, that was the first time for me to travel all alone, which was so meaningful and wonderful!! I wanted to film all these special moments and put it into one music video...and I think it worked quite well!

Did you shoot it yourself?
Yep! All by myself using G2 phone.

How did you get your rap name?
Oh it’s a long story. Well, first, I wanted to name something related to ‘cheek’. Because I used to have quite big cheeks on my face. (maybe I still have those big cheeks right now) I actually discussed my rap name with our crew leader! The first name I called out was ‘Y-Cheek’... cause my actual name is Yoo Min, starts with ‘Y’,so Y-Cheek..!! But that was too ordinary and weird. I continued to mumble ‘cheek, cheek, cheek’ and that time our crew leader shouted out, "What about Chicky?" Yea, that’s how I got my rap name. But actually it quite matches with what I’ve got! I was born in the chickens year (1993) (I don’t know if this is the right way to say it in English.. sounds bit weird.. chicken’s year...), I love eating fried chickens, my nickname was ‘chick’ when I was young. yea.. maybe pretty that much is it!

How long have you been rapping?
About 2 years.

What inspired you to start rapping?
This relates to my mixtape topic. The desire to express my darkness inside myself was the start of my rapping. At first, I just wanted to sing a song not the rapping because I thought the melody was all that I needed to express all my emotions. But then... it was a miracle for me to face Hip-Hop. I never knew that I was going to do rapping. But after I knew how exciting it was to write my thoughts down and story and to express that through rapping, I couldn’t stop doing it. I felt so amazing about expressing my emotion through rapping. To me, rap is a way to sublimate my darkness. Actually, ‘Ma Black’, which is the 4th track in my mixtape, is one of the tracks that really shows the darkness inside me.

Describe your style of rapping?
As I said the start of my artist life was the melody of music, I enjoy rapping melodically. There is a melody that right comes into my mind naturally when I listen to each beat. But this is same to my raps as well. Rapping that comes out naturally. Since I believe the content of lyrics is so important, I first write all my stories, all my thoughts that I want to talk about. And then I try to read out as if I’m rapping, with the style that comes out naturally! However, since I still don’t know a lot about styles of rapping, I am trying to listen to more Hip-Hop music these days.

Who are your favorite producers?
Zion.T! I think he has his own way of making his song so stylish. I like the word stylish because that’s what I prefer to be.

Which artists/singers/rappers do you look up to?
In Korea, I like the rapper Gae-Ko who belongs to Dynamic Duo. In other countries, I love Ty Dolla $ign and Future. Oh and I love Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.!! They are soooooo AWESOME!

Do you produce your own beats?
Nope, but I want to if I can do!

What is your date of birth?
7th of September, 1993

What is your Facbook/Instagram/Twitter?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
By that time I might have about 3 more mixtapes, doing lots of buskings and club performances. Never know what will happen in the future, but whatever it is, I will never give up my music life.

Any last words for the people and your fans out there?
Thank you all who listened to my music and also said good words for me! I will put in more effort to make better works and hope you like them in the future as well! And there’s a phrase that I like to tell you, which is: Carpe Diem!! I hope you all live "Carpe Diem-like" life :) Thank yo.
