G.NES comes from the southern part of South Korea. She is part of the talented new wave of Korean female rappers who raps and produces their own music. She is a talented individual who is ready to take on the world. We recently sat down with her to pick her brain. - Ferd Isaacs
Where in Korea are you from?
I'm from Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. I have been here since childhood.
경상남도 창원시, 어릴 적 부터 쭉 살고 있습니다.
How did you get your rap name?
It comes from my Christian name Agnes. So I made it so that it sounds like
'Guinness'. I took away the "A" and left the "G".
세례명에서 따왔어요. 아녜스, 영어로 표기하면 Agnes 인데
여러 발음을 조합해서 ‘아기네스’ 라는 이름을 만들었어요.
랩 네임으로 쓰기에는 너무 여려보이지 않나 싶어서
앞 글자를 빼고 ‘기네스’ 라는 이름을 사용하게 되었습니다.
What made you start rapping?
I was a vocalist in an indie band and trainee at a company called Mafia Records. I stopped singing because of laryngitis. My voice also changed over the years. Then I was exposed to rap by chance. So I have been rapping ever since.
잠깐 인디밴드 보컬도 했었고 가요제에서 대상을 수상하기도 했어요.
마피아 레코드라는 회사에서 연습생 생활도 했었는데,
결정적으로 성대결절과 후두염에 걸리는 바람에 노래를 그만두었죠.
목소리도 많이 변하고 예전 같은 음정이 나오지 않으니까
조금 힘들었어요. 하지만 음악의 끈을 놓고싶지는 않아서
우연한 기회로 랩을 접하게 되었고, 현재 지금까지 랩을 하고 있어요.
그 기회를 준 친구가 항상 제 랩을 들으면 “노래하듯이 랩을 한다”
라고 표현을 하고는 해요. 정말 그런가요?
How long have you been rapping?
I have been rapping for about two years now.
2년정도 된 것 같아요. 이제 조금 감을 잡아가는 것 같고요.
What inspires you to write lyrics and be creative?
Just looking at life, hear, feel - I write the lyrics to the theme of emotion and so on.
그냥 일상 생활에서 보고, 듣고, 느끼는 감정 등등을 주제로
가사를 써요. 의미 없어 보이는 가사도 사실은 다 의미가 있죠.
Describe your style of rapping.
I don't know the Hip-Hop genre. I'm not sure what style I got. I just rap.
저는 힙합 장르를 잘 몰라요. 이론적인 부분도 잘 모르고
그저 랩을 할 뿐이예요. 스타일도 모르겠어요. 그냥 저는 랩만 해요.

On April 11, 1993, received many blessings born on easter.

Who are your favorite rappers/singers/musicians?
Black Nut I really like. Words cannot explain his distinctive style. I respect him a lot and
want to meet him before I die.
블랙넛 (Black nut), 정말 좋아해요. 말로 설명할 수 없는
특유의 스타일과 꼭 한 번 배우고 싶은 발음,
그리고 한 사람으로써 그 분을 매우 존경합니다.

Who are your favorite producers?
I'm not sure.

What are your plans for the future?
My goal is to pass the qualifying round of the next season of Show Me The Money.
일단은 내년 시즌의 SHOW ME THE MONEY 예선에서
합격하는 것이 목표입니다.
Are you working on new music?
Hip-Hop do not know in detail about that-as is always ready to accept everything.
